ETERNAL DOOM’S ETERNAL IMPACT - WHAT THE HELL IS IT ANYWAYS?

(Not to be confused with the 2020 game “Doom Eternal”) Eternal Doom was one of the biggest projects to hit the Doom community in the 90s, and one of the most influential and impressive Doom mods of all time; a total conversion with all new original textures, sprite-work, and music, spearheaded by Team Eternal, and the one and only Team TNT (with it’s members having also been the masterminds behind Icarus, Daedalus, Final Doom, The Master Levels, and the Boom source port.)
Eternal Doom’s influence and long-lasting legacy cannot be understated — even as of it’s first release 28 years ago, there are still hundreds of Doom WADs today using Eternal Doom’s assets, inspiring some notable mapping exemplaries like Alien Vendetta and Scythe — it continues to influence mappers with it’s huge, sprawling levels, breath-taking atmosphere, advanced mapping trickery, and gorgeous architecture once thought impossible in the vanilla Id Tech 1 engine.
Eternal Doom’s lifespan lasted for well over a decade, with 5 major releases: it’s first two episodes (Eternal Doom I and II) being released in 1996, it’s third episode (Eternal Doom III) in 1997, it’s Death-match expansion (Eternal Death-match) in 1998, and it’s fourth and final campaign (Eternal Doom IV: Return From Oblivion) releasing all the way up in 2008. In short words: Eternal Doom was the Eviternity of the 90s Doom modding scene.

ETERNAL DOOM PROJECTS:

ETERNAL DOOM I: The original 12 levels, created by Team Eternal.

ETERNAL DOOM II: An additional 15 levels, now lead by Team TNT.

ETERNAL DOOM III: The last 7 levels, adding up to a whole 32 level campaign and 2 additional bonus levels (see the 1997 section in Doomworld’s “10 Years of Doom” article.)

ETERNAL DEATHMATCH: A set of 19 additional Death-match exclusive levels, notable for containing a separate new soundtrack — composed by Adam Landefeld, as opposed to Rich Nagel; the composer for the original Eternal Doom.

THE RETURN: A texture pack meant for Doom modders containing numerous textures ripped from Eternal Doom, but released independently from the main Eternal Doom releases.

ETERNAL DOOM IV: RETURN FROM OBLIVION: A final 7 level episode for Zdoom based source ports, including new monster variants, graphics, and a hub-oriented progression system. (see page 2 of Doomworld’s 2008 Cacowards.)

ETERNAL DOOM: COMEBACK: A new ongoing project, spearheaded by… well, me! An upcoming 5 level episode for Eternal Doom, including new original music tracks and graphics, with each level being released independently from eachother.
